2020-21
Before COVID-19 hit, our 15th anniversary season was slated be among our wide-ranging to date and reflected Yarn/Wire’s sprawling addiction to and insatiable curiosity about music. However, as we know now, in-person events were impossible.
In response, Yarn/Wire Produced a project called “Feedback with Yarn/Wire”.
This project arose out the uncertainty for performers and presenters about the state of artistic programming (and educational activities) during COVID. In order to address this in a constructive way that will have impact beyond the virus, Yarn/Wire decided to produce our own online web series that is centered on the process of making new music. It ended up being a
“Feedback” is now a series of 50 live video interviews with composers, musicians, and Y/W members covering a wide ranging set of topics, including our repertoire built over the past 15 years, as well as new works in progress. These interviews are all available on YouTube.
Even without new performances, this project provided a lifeline to our disconnected world, and was a source of regular activity for the ensemble during this time. The conversations brimmed with energy and offered some unique answers to the question: “What is creative music?”. For Yarn/Wire, it is relationships with musicians, composers, artists, and a dedication to making work that is meaningful, challenging, impactful, varied, and relevant. The strength of the group lies in its small size - a larger ensemble would not be able to pivot so often and so neatly while engaging so completely with people who trust the group’s own compositional and interpretive instincts. The future is always full of change, but for Yarn/Wire there continues to be a bright future with ever varied projects and musical directions. For now though, Yarn/Wire is thrilled to have created a forum in which to celebrate a rich body of work created to date while forging ever varied paths to follow in the future.
Plans for “Feedback” in the future will include transcripts and a deeper archive of material surrounding our past work.
