REWIRE FESTIVAL
The Hague, Netherlands
April 6-7, 2024
Rewire is proud to present a focus programme around the pioneering composer, sound artist, and musician Annea Lockwood. The moving, curious, and ever-innovative work of Lockwood has spanned over 50 years. With an ecological sensitivity running through her music and an unparalleled attention to listening to and understanding sound as an autonomous part of our lives, Lockwood’s music is deeply rooted in contemporary ideas. During Rewire 2024, Lockwood will be presenting works on all festival days, including Piano Burning on Thursday 4 April to kick off the festival. Furthermore, Lockwood herself takes to the stage for a rare performance with MAZE Ensemble, while Yarn/Wire perform recent music by Lockwood especially written for the quartet.
“Who’s haunting who here?” asks composer and sound artist Ben Vida on the opening track of his 2023 album The Beat My Head Hit, made in collaboration with ensemble Yarn/Wire and soprano vocalist Nina Dante. Not entirely eerie, the persistent, lively ghosts of the record spring out from Vida’s voice: littering the songs with knowledge and intrigue in the form of humorous mundanity and sparkling magic realism. Poetry flows in the record. Through strict cadence and flourishes of rhythmic strangeness, Vida’s voice – amplified and duplicated harmoniously by Dante’s singing – provides a steady but unpredictable throughline in the album, broken only by gasps of breath.
