WHAT IS THE YARN/WIRE INSTITUTE?

The Yarn/Wire Institute is an immersive and collaborative program focused on the music of today. Open to pianists, percussionists, and composers, the institute addresses a wide range of musical styles, approaches, topics, and techniques. Institute attendees work side by side with faculty members on the development, rehearsal, and performance of new work, engage in lessons, coachings, and masterclasses, and collaborate with a diverse roster of fellow participants to expand their skills and knowledge of 21st century music.

HOW DO I APPLY TO THE INSTITUTE?

The institute is open to pianists, percussionists, and composers 18 years and older. There is no application fee, and musicians with any level of experience are encouraged to apply. Performance materials must be submitted via link (i.e., Youtube, SoundCloud, Vimeo). Score samples and letters of recommendation must be submitted in PDF format.

Yarn/Wire is devoted to expanding the representation of works by women, gender non-conforming and underrepresented groups, and as such strives to create an atmosphere of inclusiveness that respects everyone  regardless of their race/ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, socioeconomic status, geography, citizenship status, or religion.

Performers
Please submit your C.V., one recent solo or chamber performance, and a letter of recommendation. Video and/or audio links of live performances or studio recordings will be accepted.

Composers
Please submit your C.V., one recent PDF score sample, and a letter of recommendation. While not required, recordings of these works are invited where possible.

HOW MUCH DOES THE INSTITUTE COST?

Tuition: $800
Room & Board: $1,200
A limited number of need-based partial tuition scholarships will be available. ($250-500)
Scholarship application materials will be sent directly to accepted participants.

Room and Board

Institute participants will stay on the campus of Stony Brook University. Occupancy is two people per room and basic linens (sheets, blanket, pillow) will be provided. Participants are encouraged bring any additional items. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner at campus dining facilities is included in the room and board cost as well. Dining at Stony Brook is a la carte, and the meal plan is built for ~$30/day in campus dining dollars.

Travel
Stony Brook University is accessible by the Long Island Railroad from NYC. It can also be reached by bus and car, and is close to three of New York City’s airports (ISP, JFK, LGA). Complete travel details and directions will be provided to confirmed participants.
